2012/2013 Trojan Wrestling
The Chambersburg Trojan wrestling team compiled an overall record of 17-5 this past season in the tough Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division. As a team, the Trojan mat men qualified for the District 3 team duals for the first time where they made the most of their opportunity by winning three straight close matches to earn a spot in the district finals where they finished second and earned their first birth to the PIAA state dual meet tournament.
In the post season, the Trojan mat men qualified six wrestlers for districts. These wrestlers were: Freshman Colin Runshaw 25-12 with 13 pins at 106 lbs., Sr. Tanner Shoap, 41-9 with 9 pins and the Sectional Champ at 113 lbs; Freshman Garrett Kyner, 30-14 with 5 pins and the Sectional Champ at 120 lbs; Soph David Rump, 27-13 with 2 pins at 126 lbs; Sr. Garett Hammond 47-6 with 19 pins at 152 lbs, and Sr. Dontez King 29-13 with 10 pins at 195 lbs. Of these six District Qualifiers, Tanner Shoap went on to win the 113 lb. weight class for his second district title in as many years, while Garett Hammond finished second in the district. While at states these two put on a show for the entire state to enjoy as they wrestled an outstanding tournament with each of them finding themselves on the medal stand at the end of the weekend for the third time. Tanner finished 7th at 113 lbs, and Garett finished 1st at 152 lbs. With his state title, Garett is the second state champ in Chambersburg history and he is Chambersburg’s only two-time State Champ. Both Garett and Tanner are Chambersburg’s only three-time state medalists. Both Tanner and Garett represented us proudly in the District 3 vs. District 11 All-Star meet where they both won their matches convincingly.
Tanner Shoap, Garett Hammond, and David Rump were all first-team selections to the Mid-Penn Commonwealth division All-Star Team at their weight classes. Colin Runshaw and Garrett Kyner were both second-team selections to the Mid-Penn Commonwealth division All-Star Team at their weight classes. Tanner Shoap and Garett Hammond were both selected to the Patriot News Big 14 team, and Garett Hammond was named the Public Opinion Wrestler of the year.
Graduating seniors from this year’s team are: Garett Hammond, Ian Hammond, Dontez King, James McKenzie, Tanner Shoap, Adam Tardosky and Devon Williams. We are losing talented wrestlers to graduation, but we have significant firepower coming back for next season. Next year’s returning varsity letter winning wrestlers are: Freshman Colin Runshaw and Garrett Kyner, both District qualifiers. Sophomores: David Rump (District Qualifier) and David Law. Juniors: John Hughes, Calvin O’Farrell, Dawson Arnold, Cameron Kiger, and David Helm.
